Exciting, new, “Dinner Theatre” returns to Mazatlán for the second season.
Dinner theatre, (theatre style entertainment provided around dinner, or lunch,) has been very popular for decades in many parts of the world. Murder mystery dinner theatre – a show which is based around a murder having been committed, with clues and information which enable the patrons to decide who the murderer might be, is one of the most popular forms of dinner theatre. Mazatlán’s new Murder in Mexico productions of The Hacienda Homicide, (after last season’s show My Big Fat Mexican Murder) and My Big Fat Murderous Mexican Wedding, all in English, takes the genre a step further with an innovative, fully interactive and widely exciting show, along with unusually good food, in interesting surroundings. The show runs at the beautiful “murder” events room at Las Flores Beach Resort in the Golden Zone.
HISTORY and information about principals
Former Californian Bodie Kellogg has loved Mazatlán since his arrival 9 years ago, and in that time he has undertaken various endeavours, including being the local production support for the Gator Boys cable television show’s visit in late 2013, when they filmed several local episodes. He and Wendy Kain, an Australian former lawyer who has been here 4 years, were anxious to take on another project which would give to their beloved adopted city an additional attraction for English-speaking tourists. For decades Wendy has been a Murder Mystery Theatre afficionado, and the world wide popularity of such dinner theatre events prompted her and Bodie to write a hilarious satirical and farcical show based around a murder which takes place at the restaurant, and which, along with the actor/Detective, audience members try to solve. But in addition to the mystery of who did the murder, the storyline also has many other enjoyable and very humorous intricacies and entanglements. In addition, in an innovative twist, guests can choose instead of just watching the show, to play a role in it. They might even be a suspect. Even they may not know until close to the end whether or not they are the murderer.
The show, My Big Fat Mexican Murder, ran during the last winter season, with great success. The new shows for the 2015/2016 season are The Hacienda Homicide, and My Big Fat Murderous Mexican Wedding, are presented in the lovely “murder” room overlooking the pool and beach at wonderful Las Flores Beach Resort in the Golden Zone (Playa Gaviotas 212). The reviews last season were first rate, and this season the production will be much enhanced with sound and other efforts, so it is expected that the new show will be even more appreciated, not least for the food and service, as well as for the ambience. Increasingly tourists are getting in touch in advance from the United States and Canada to secure bookings.
It seems that Mazatlán has one more very enjoyable evening attraction for visitors.
BIOGRAPHY OF ACTORS
Born in California, USA, in 1946, throughout his life Bodie has from time to time appeared in amateur productions. He plays the parts of two of the major characters in the Murder in Mexico productions, and particularly as he is one of the writers of the script, he has easily made both parts uniquely his own. These efforts were his first script writing experience, though he does author a column for local English language magazine M Magazine since it began years ago, an experience which prompts him to consider the local idiosyncracies.
Estela Alanís Cárdenas
Born in Mazatlan in 1971, she holds a Bachelor Degree in Latin American Literature from University of Guadalajara. She undertook several courses in Film and Screenwriting in Guadalajara, Cuba and Seattle, as well as various different Theater and Play-writing workshops. Rodrigo Muñoz Rodríguez
Aged 27, Rodrigo studied Classical Acting at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts in the UK where he performed several Shakespeare plays such as Midsummer’s Night Dream (Puck), Richard II (Brackenbury), Julius Caesar (Brutus) and other classical plays. In Mexico City he acted in Beyond Therapy. He is also a Drama Teacher at Instituto Anglo Moderno where he has directed different children plays’ adaptations like Matilda The Musical, Peter Pan, The Sound of Music, and Alice in Wonderland.
Ana Laura Rincón
Mazatláca Ana graduated from Lasalle University in León, Guanajuato. She has worked as a reporter and radio host; but her passion lead her to the theater company Forum, where she starred in Witches and The adventures of Captain Bombastic. Her musical acting experiences have been in Fiddler on the roof Hairspray. In Tepic, Nayarit, she played in Rosa de dos Aromas.
A lawyer from Sydney Australia, Wendy’s extensive experience attending murder mystery dinner theatre, and even numerous murder mystery weekends, predestined her for the co-writing she now does with Bodie for My Big Fat Mexican Murder. She is also the Director of the productions. An experienced public speaker and television and radio guest and host, her role in My Big Fat Mexican Murder is the first acting she has done for decades.

THE HACIENDA HOMICIDE Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre, January to April 2015
Mazatlán’s new hit tourist attraction has recommenced.
A popular local expatriate once again leads the cast in the exciting new dinner theatre event, Murder in Mexico. In mid-January 2015 the first of Mazatlán’s murder mystery dinner theatre shows (My Big Fat Mexican Murder) took place, to great acclaim. From the start, seats were sold out and booking were made for 2 months in advance, including from North America by tourists who want to see the show when they get here. Murder in Mexico now has a great new show, The Hacienda Homicide. From 17th November 2015. It runs every Tuesday night in the Golden Zone.
Well-known Centro Historico resident of 8 years, Bodie Kellogg, writer and photographer amongst other things, has provided Mazatlán with a murder mystery with a difference. Guests enjoy a three course dinner and drinks, and in between, a murder takes place. Guests try to figure out who the murderer is, amidst hilarious surprises. Audience members can book to play a role in the show, reading from a script, and wearing whatever costume items are provided when they arrive. It was immediately clear that the experience of playing a role is a highly sought after one. Another great difference between this murder mystery and many shows, arises from the additional twists and turns in the story. It is not just the mystery of who the murderer is and how the murder was done. In addition, there are almost countless surprises, quite a few collateral and very surprising storylines, and constant laugh out loud strong humour from start to finish. A little unconventional, from time to time risque, and occasionally downright rude, the show captivates the audience. Unassuming visitors are thrown into a living melodrama, with the opportunity to correctly pinpoint the killer and murder method, and walk away with the glory and the prize.
Producer and co-writer, and actor, Bodie Kellogg said “We went to LA and San Diego before our first show opened, and just recently New York City, to see the best murder mystery dinner theatre shows in each place, to judge ours against theirs. Our goal was to make a show which was supremely entertaining, fast-paced and laugh-filled, and a challenging who-dunnit, from start to finish. It is clear from the audience reactions that our wonderful actors have managed to achieve that goal. We were also very anxious to ensure that the dinner and drinks which go with the packages, were of the very highest quality, and we have managed to ensure that goal has been met this season. The air conditioned private “murder” events room at Las Flores Beach Resort is the perfect venue, and the chefs and waiters will ensure they enhance the evening’s enjoyment.
Sr Kellogg and his partner and co-writer Wendy Kain, who is also the director of the show as well as having a small part in it, provided the Mazatlán production support for the Discovery Channel’s cable television hit Gator Boys’ visit here to film a few episodes at the end of 2013. Ms Kain said “We knew the Gator boys Mazatlán episodes, shown in about 52 countries around the world, would be a boost for tourism in Mazatlán. This dinner theatre show is on a much smaller scale, but we think that it also, in a different way, is a very positive event for Mazatlán’s tourism. It is a great bonus to us that we are all having so much fun doing the show.”
It is envisaged that from time to time further shows will be presented, in addition to the weekly show. Tourists have another sensational reason to take home marvelous memories from their Mazatlan visit.
